Allysson is an alumni of the Pathways Program in Québec City, class of 2024. She is currently at le Cégep de Limoilou, studying Humanities. During her spare time, she is part of a committee that supports newcomer and immigrant students.

Allysson struggled with staying focused on her homework and studying throughout high school. “There was a lot going on at home, and it was hard to concentrate. I’d even wake up early just to try and do my homework without distractions.” That started to change when she joined the Pathways Program.

“Pathways gave me a space to focus and get my work done and the confidence to ask for help. There was always someone there for me if I had any trouble with homework,” Allysson explained. Allysson’s first language is French, and she struggled in English class—especially when preparing for the Grade 10 English exams and the Grade 11 Ministry exam. Through the Pathways Program, she found the support she needed, working on language exercises to build her skills.  “They never gave up on me. Without Pathways, I wouldn’t have been able to get my work done or pass the exam, and I wouldn’t have met so many amazing people.”

Pathways staff exposed Allysson to financial support, which was life-changing. Growing up in a low-income household, money was tight. Her mother worked two jobs but still struggled to keep up with expenses. In the back of Allysson’s mind, she had concerns over how she could afford CEGEP, so she started working two jobs during school. “I’ve been working since I was 16 to help out,” Allysson shared. “I started as a camp counsellor, then worked as a cashier with my mom. I wanted to be independent and pay for my studies myself. I didn’t want to add yet another financial burden on my mom. Everything is expensive.”

That’s where the Pathways scholarship came along. Students who participate in the program for a minimum of two years can earn a scholarship toward their post-secondary education or training. This support, alongside another scholarship Allysson received through her school, made all the difference. “It helped cover my tuition and school supplies. And it helped me buy clothes for school and some decorations to make my room feel more like home.”

It also gave Allysson the freedom to enjoy small things, like adding to her growing book collection—a lifelong passion of hers. Most importantly, the scholarships eased any financial pressures Allysson had and allowed her to dedicate her time to her studies without needing to work multiple jobs. “Without the scholarships, I might have had to take a year off just to save up for school or have been forced to ask my mom for help, adding to her stress,” she revealed.

Now enrolled at le Cégep de Limoilou, Allysson is studying Humanities and is interested in pursuing law, psychology, or journalism. “Pathways helped me explore my options and see the positives of each career. I feel more confident now, knowing I have the support and foundation to follow whatever path I choose.”
