Pathways’ summer programming helps students stay engaged, build confidence, and continue learning long after the school year ends.

For many young people, summer can be a break from schoolwork. But it can also mean losing the daily routines, connections, and support systems that help them thrive during the school year.

To bridge this gap, Pathways Saint John runs activities throughout the summer. From community outings to leadership opportunities, summer programming helps students stay connected and continue learning outside the classroom.

“Learning doesn’t just have to be about textbooks and assignments,” says Adreya, a Pathways Saint John alum. “It’s also about exploring your community.”

Adreya graduated from Pathways six years ago and credits the program for helping her build confidence and discover opportunities to give back to her community. This summer, she’s returned to the program as a student staff member, helping to organize summer activities and experiences that students will remember. She wants to create the same sense of connection and belonging that shaped her own experience as a Pathways student.

“What’s most rewarding is knowing that I’m part of a team that’s creating a safe space where young people can have fun and take part in activities that they may not otherwise have access to,” she says.

So far, students at Pathways Saint John have participated in weekly sports days at a local field, encouraging them to stay active while spending time with peers. They’re also looking forward to an upcoming trip to Magic Mountain, one of Atlantic Canada’s largest water parks.

One of Adreya’s favourite moments was hosting a taco night. She prepared several pounds of ground beef, chopped fresh vegetables, and even shared her family’s Pico de Gallo recipe. All the items were laid out on a self-serve bar, so students could make their own tacos exactly as they wanted.

“Because we’re in an area of the city where food insecurity is a big concern, seeing students build their own meals with lots of fresh vegetables and no restrictions on amounts was heartwarming,” Adreya says.

While students are having fun at Pathways, they’re also building practical skills. They follow schedules, work in groups, and take on responsibilities throughout the day to help them develop time management and teamwork skills.

“We always make sure to have a schedule to follow so students learn how to manage different activities during the few hours we’re together,” Adreya explains.

Combining engaging summer programming with the support of staff, volunteers, and alumni like Adreya helps students return to school in the fall with stronger relationships and a renewed sense of confidence. School may come to a pause during the summer, but opportunities to learn and grow never have to.
